It is often claimed, soul music would be the mother of pop music, but is that really so? It is clear that this direction of popular music was created by African-American musicians and that variations of Soul music to this day dominate the international charts. Soul music came about at a time when the music industry was opening more doors for black artists.

Geared toward blacks in the 50s, 60s, 70s and early 80s, Soul music became a genre loved my many races, including whites and Hispanics. Popularized by the beloved Don Cornelius with the hit TV Series Soul Train, this genre exploded and gained national and international attention as he spotlighted such guests as Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Gladys Night and the Pips, the Chi-Lites and Millie Jackson. With Soul Train reaching international audiences, it catapulted the love of soul music to other cultures and inspiring other races of people to sing soul. And with soul music crossing cultural barriers, Soul Train has featured such guests as Michael McDonald, the Average White Band, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Expose', Paula Abdul, Frankie Valli and the multi-cultural Tower of Power.

Soul music emerged from the Rock and Roll, Gospel and Blues eras by compositing styles of Rock and Roll and Blues artists like Chubby Checker, Muddy Waters, Little Richard, Lightnin Hopkins, Jimmy Reed and B.B. King and Gospel artists like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, the Staple Singers and Al Green to create something in between, a music genre called Soul. Emerging from artist singing a mixture of gospel, Mississippi blues and rock and roll in love songs from the depths of their hearts, Soul music would center itself around a person, place, object or emotions, sung in metaphoric ways, describing in detail the thing being sung about. Soul music takes a slower pace than Rock and Roll and a faster tempo than the blues and can be at tempo with gospel music.

These artists helped shape the Soul music genre for other cultures as well.
