German music
German music is a rich tapestry of history and development. Stretching back centuries it has been influenced by some of the biggest events that have shaped the world.
Traditional German Music
While German music has a folk culture the same as most nations do, its medieval period was heavily influenced by the Latin hymns and chants of the dominant Christian culture. In the 12th and 14th centuries this started to change with the development of romantic music, and in the 16th century German composers created some of the greatest classical and opera pieces in their respective genres. From Wagner to Bach, Germany stands out in these classical areas.
The Evolution of German Music
The splitting of Germany into East and West led to some very different changes in how music was viewed. Rock, jazz, and other styles of music were common in West Germany, and considered contraband in East Germany. Once the country was United, and influences were allowed to mingle once more, certain styles and inventions rose to prominence. German metal, made popular by bands like Rammstein and Megaherz, became internationally known along with electronica and dance music. Germany also boasts a number of other styles, from R&B and soul music to hip hop and others, but it is less well-known for these styles.
