Chillout music can be unlike most traditional music. It can have a quality that changes the listener’s state of mind. It can chill-out, create a mood with sound textures instead of telling a story with words and lyrics. It can have a beat or it can wander for long periods to explore meditative sounds. 1. Chillout Music in ambient genre
Ambient music began with electronic sound synthesizers in the 1970s. Two early German bands were Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh. In 1978 Brian Eno came up with the name “ambient music” in his album “Ambient 1: Music for Airports”. Brian Eno was inspired by people as different as composer John Cage, jazz artist Miles Davis and early 20th century composer Erik Satie. Some other ambient music pioneers wrote noted film scores. They include Wendy Carlos for “Clockwork Orange” and Vangelis for “Chariots of Fire”, ”Blade Runner” and “1492 Conquest of Paradise”. Electric Light Orchestra developed a warmer type of ambient electronic music melded with house beats like hip-hop, dub and trance that became today’s ambient house music.

Space Music includes ambient music that brings a quality of contemplation, spaciousness and inspiration. It is used in cinematic soundtracks, in planetariums and for relaxation and meditation. The “Hearts of Space” radio show and record label has brought many artists to its audience since 1984. Different styles of Ambient Music
Other styles of ambient music are ambient dub, dark ambient, ambient industrial, ambient trance and psybient. Some of these are influenced by world music, Jamaican artists, hip-hop, deep bass lines, harmonic sound, traditional instruments, archaic vocal techniques, meditative singing and electronic tracks. Psybient is often performed at music festivals and as background for yoga and Qigong. Illbient is a form of ambient music that came about in 1994 that mixes hip-hop, world groove and electronic music.
2. Chillout Music in lounge genre
People always want to be seen as cool. Going to a lounge was the way to relax and be seen. The men would be dressed in suits and the women in nice dresses. The drinking was liberal, the talking was nonstop and the music was all about tranquility. The music harkens back to the days when people would go out to relax in smoky lounges. Lounge music was what the cool people listened to. The trend was picked back up in the eighties and nineties. With singers like Michael Buble, there is always a remembrance for what lounge music is.

Frank Sinatra had to do things his way, while fellow rat packer Sammy Davis Jr just had to be himself. Lounge music is considered to be for a bygone era, but people still go out for nights were the music is good and the seats are comfortable. Groups like Pink Martini and Triangle Sun carry on the tradition with some modern twists. It is about people being able to have a cocktail, talk and enjoy the lounge music.
