Reggae Music History
Reggae music was invented in Jamaica during the 1960s. Even though Jamaica's economy was rapidly growing around this time, the wealth was being funneled into the hands certain people. The poor people of the shanty towns fought against these people in many ways, but they was able to express themselves by creating a form of music that gave them a voice. Reggae music was used to speak to the hearts and soul of the poor people while exposing the truth about social injustices in the country of Jamaica and the world in general. The word reggae itself means ragga which, in Jamaican culture, stands for ragged, rugged, and poor.
