Traditional Bosnian Music

Traditional Bosnian music has three distinct styles: Ilahije i Kaside, Sevdalinka music, and traditional Bosnian folk music. Ilahije i Kaside is an older type of traditional Bosnian music that largely features religious subject matter. Sevdalinka music is not necessarily religious in tone, but most often features sad subject matters, including those of death and heartbreak. This type of Bosnian music traditionally features the use of a saz, a stringed instrument that is similar to a lute, but often accordions and drums are added. Traditional Bosnian folk music is the most current of traditional music, and it features multiple singers who combine major and minor keys as songs are sung with layered vocals. Traditionally folk versions of bagpipes, wooden flutes, and guitar-like instruments accompany this root Bosnian music. While Sevdalinka music is sad in tone, this version of Bosnian folk music is popular among many adjacent regions. As a result, traditional Bosnian folk music often brings people together.

Modern Bosnian Music

Modern Bosnian music covers a wide range of genres including pop, rock, hip hop, metal, and electronic music. The Sarajevo school of pop rock is a specific Bosnian music style of the latter twentieth century. It was heavily influenced by classic American rock as well as the punk scene of the late 1970s and 80s. Much like in the rest of Europe, electronic music has become immensely popular in Bosnia. London's Neurofunk and Germany's trance music have served as heavy influences on the Bosnian music's electronic scene.
